What to Feed Tilapia at Each Growth Stage
Raising tilapia successfully comes down to one thing most beginners overlook: feeding the right food at the right stage. Tilapia have very different nutritional needs as they grow, and using the wrong feed — or skipping a stage — can permanently stunt their development.
Here's exactly what to feed your tilapia from day one to harvest.
Stage 1: Fry (Under 1 Inch)
Tilapia fry begin life grazing on algae in the wild, so their first food should mimic that. Sinking algae-based wafers like Ziegler's Algae Discs or our Tilapia Basics Fry Algae Rounds are ideal. These provide the wheat germ, brewer's yeast, and vitamin C fry need for gill formation, fin growth, and immune development. Feed until fish reach about 1 inch.
Stage 2: Fingerlings (1–5 Inches)
Once tilapia hit 1 inch, transition to a small sinking pellet. The Tilapia Basics Starter (1/16" pellet) or Aquamax 300 are both excellent choices. This is the fastest growth period in a tilapia's life — proper nutrition here has a major impact on final size and feed efficiency. Continue until fish reach 5 inches.
Stage 3: Juveniles (5–6 Inches)
This stage is brief but important. Switch to a slightly larger pellet like the Tilapia Basics Grower (3/32") or Aquamax 400. Skipping this step and jumping straight to adult pellets can reduce appetite and slow development. Feed until fish reach 6 inches.
Stage 4: Adults (6 Inches and Up)
Adult tilapia are ready for a full-size floating pellet. Tilapia Basics Adult and Aquamax 4000 are both formulated for efficient grow-out. Floating pellets make it easy to monitor how much your fish are eating and prevent overfeeding, which protects water quality.
